Emeritus Inactive License for Retired Licensees
Requirements
At the time of license renewal, you may apply for an emeritus inactive license if you are retired and do not intend to resume social work practice in any setting in Minnesota. Find complete requirements in
Minnesota Statutes section 148E.0752.
- While on emeritus inactive license status:
- Practice Prohibited: You may not practice or advertise or present yourself as authorized to practice social work in any setting in Minnesota (including settings exempt from licensure under Minnesota Statutes section 148E.065
- Representation: You must include “emeritus inactive” in any use of the license credential LSW, LGSW, LISW, or LICSW
- Continuing education (CE) requirements and supervised practice (if applicable) for the last license renewal term (when your license was active) must be reported at the time you apply for emeritus inactive license status
- The Board may take disciplinary or corrective action against your license based on violations of applicable law or regulations of the Board
Application Process and Fee
You may apply for an emeritus inactive license
only at the time of license renewal:
- Submit application and fee
- Apply online: Apply and pay using the Board’s online services
- Apply by mail: Download the Application for License Renewal and Status Change and submit via mail with check or money order
- Select “Emeritus Inactive” as renewal status
- Fee is $65
- Report CE hours for last license renewal term
Reactivation
Reactivating to active status from emeritus inactive:
- You may reactivate your license within the four years following the effective date of emeritus inactive license status
- If you do not apply to reactivate your license within four years following effective date of emeritus inactive license status, your license will remain on emeritus inactive license status
- To obtain an active license after four years you are required to reapply and meet all current application requirements including a valid ASWB exam score within eight year of the application date to obtain an active license
