Temporary Leave License Status
Requirements
At the time of license renewal only, you may apply for a temporary leave license status if you are not practicing social work in any setting in Minnesota, but you may wish to resume practice in the future. Find complete requirements in
Minnesota Statutes section 148E.0751.
- While on temporary leave license status:
- Practice Prohibited: You may not practice or advertise or present yourself as authorized to practice social work in any setting in Minnesota (including settings exempt from licensure under Minnesota Statutes section 148E.065
- Representation: You must include “temporary leave” in any use of the license credential LSW, LGSW, LISW, or LICSW
- Temporary leave status may not exceed four consecutive years
- Continuing education (CE) requirements and supervised practice (if applicable) for the last license renewal term (when your license was active) must be reported at the time you apply for temporary leave license status
- The Board may take disciplinary or corrective action against the license based on violations of law and regulations of the Board
Application Process and Fee
You may apply for temporary leave only at the time of license renewal:
- Submit application and fee
- Apply online: Apply and pay using the Board’s online services
- Apply by mail: Download the Application for License Renewal and Status Change and submit via mail with check or money order
- Select “Temporary Leave” as renewal status
- Fee is the same amount as 24-month license renewal fee for active license
- Report CE hours for last license renewal term
- Report supervised practice, if applicable, received during last renewal term
Reactivation
Your license may remain on temporary leave license status for no more than four consecutive years.
Reactivating to active status from temporary leave:
- You may reactivate your license at any time within the four years allowed for temporary leave license status
- Go to the Reactivating a License page for complete reactivation requirements
Automatic expiration:
- If you do not apply to reactivate your license within 60 days following the end of the four-year period, your license will automatically expire
