2024 Legislative Session Update

The Social Work Services Licensure Compact and Provisional Licensure bills modifying and recodifying Minnesota Statutes, Chapters 148D and 148E was included in HF 5247  and signed by Governor Walz on May 24, 2024.

  • The Social Work Licensure Compact:  The Social Work Licensure Compact has been enacted in at least seven states and has reached activation status, however multistate licenses are not yet being issued. The implementation process for the compact will take 12 to 24 months before multistate licenses are issued. More information about the Social Work Licensure Compact can be found on Council of State Government Website. Social Work Services Licensure Compact language can be found in Laws 2024, chapter 27, article 32.
  • Provisional Licensure:  Changes to the provisional license can be found in Laws 2024, chapter 27, article 23. These changes will be effective on October 1, 2024. The Board of Social Work will share more information about the provisional licensure pathway after the final statute language is published.
    • The Board will host informational sessions about the new changes to provisional license in September 2024. The Board will send details about the informational session closer to September. Interested individuals are encouraged to subscribe to the Board’s GovDelivery for notification regarding the informational sessions.
    • Currently, the Board is not accepting provisional license applications for the new provisional license changes until October 1, 2024. 
    • The Board is accepting application and issuing provisional license for applicants who meet current eligibility criteria according to MN Statute 148D.061 Subd
