Reactivating a License

Reactivating from Expiration or Voluntary Termination

Expired or Voluntarily Terminated licenses may be reactivated within one year of the expiration date or effective date of voluntary termination.

Reactivation Process

• Submit application and fee within one year of the expiration day or effective date of voluntary termination
  • Apply online: Apply and pay using the Board’s online services
  • Apply by mail: Download the Application for Reactivation from Expiration or Voluntary Termination and submit via mail with check or money order 
• Report CE hours effective at the time the license expired or was voluntarily terminated

Reactivating from Temporary Leave License Status

Temporary leave license status may be reactivated within four years of the effective date of temporary leave status.

Reactivation Process

• Email the Board at social.work@state.mn.us, including your full name and license number, to request an application to reactivate from temporary leave
• Submit application and fee by mail: Complete the Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board and submit via mail with check or money order 
• Document compliance with the following continuing education (CE) requirements:
  • 2 hours in social work ethics

  • Complete the Board's "Jurisprudence Online Learning Module" in your online profile

Fees

• The fee to reactivate a license from temporary leave is the prorated share of the renewal fee for your license 
• Your prorated fees is calculated upon receipt of a written request for reactivation and specified on the Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board

Re-licensure Options

• If you do not reactivate within 60 days of the expiration date of temporary leave license status, your license will automatically expire  
• An expired license is subject to the reactivation requirements outlined under the "Expired/Voluntary Termination" tab on this page

Reactivating from Emeritus Active

Emeritus active license status may be reactivated to active status at any time as long as the emeritus active license status is current.

• Pro bono or volunteer social work practice, or;
• Not to exceed 500 hours paid social work practice per year for the exclusive purpose of:  
  1. Providing licensing supervision as specified in Minnesota Statutes sections 148E.100 to 148E.125 
  2. Providing consultation to licensees as specified in Minnesota Statutes section 148E.200, subdivision 2 
  3. Presenting continuing education (CE) activities as specified in Minnesota Statutes section 148E.130, subdivision 9

• Submit application and fee by mail: Complete Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board and submit via mail with check or money order

• The fee to reactivate a license from Emeritus Active is the prorated share of the renewal fee for your license  
• Your prorated fee is calculated upon receipt of a written request for reactivation and specified on the Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board

Re-licensure Options

• An Emeritus Active license must be renewed every two years on your regularly scheduled renewal date 
• If you do not renew your Emeritus Active license or reactivate to active status, the license will automatically expire 
• An expired license is subject to the requirements for reactivation from expiration outlined under the "Expired/Voluntary Termination" tab on this page

Reactivating from Emeritus Inactive

Emeritus inactive license status may be reactivated within four years of the effective date of emeritus inactive license status.

Reactivation Process

• Email the Board at social.work@state.mn.us, including your full name and license number, to request an application to reactivate from emeritus inactive
• Submit application and fee by mail: Complete the Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board and submit via mail with check or money order 
• Document compliance with the following continuing education (CE) requirements: 
  • Obtain at least two hours in social work ethics 
  • Complete the Board’s “Jurisprudence Online Learning Module” in your online profile

• The fee to reactivate a license from emeritus inactive is the prorated share of the renewal fee for your license 
• Your prorated fees is calculated upon receipt of a written request for reactivation and specified on the Application for Reactivation form provided by the Board

Re-licensure Options

• If you do not reactivate within four years of the effective date of emeritus inactive license status, the emeritus inactive license status is maintained, but may no longer be reactivated
• To obtain an active license after the reactivation window emeritus inactive has ended, you must reapply and meet all requirements for licensure at the time of reapplication, including a valid ASWB exam score within eight years of the application date
