Alternate License Statuses

Learn more about changes to Social Work Practice Act effective August 1, 2020 

There are three alternate license statuses available to licensees who are not currently practicing social work or retired from social work practice in Minnesota. You may only apply for an alternate license status at the time of license renewal. Review complete requirements under Minnesota Statues sections 148E.0751, 148E.0752, and 148E.0753 and click the links below for detailed information about requirements for each alternate license status:

  • Temporary Leave License Status: May not be engaged in social work practice in any setting in Minnesota (including settings exempt from licensure)
  • Emeritus Inactive License Status: Retired from social work practice and not engaged in social work practice in any setting in Minnesota (including settings exempt from licensure)
  • Emeritus Active License Status: Retired from social work practice and may only engage in unpaid social work practice, or up to 500 hours per year of paid practice in three specific practice areas only including, 1) providing licensing supervision; 2) providing consultation to licensees; or, 3) presenting continuing education (CE) activities
