Resources for Law Enforcement PMP Requestors

Minnesota Statutes Sect. 152.126 subd. 6 allows federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities access to prescription monitoring program data when acting pursuant to a valid search warrant.

The program staff will promptly fulfill requests for data when submitted with the available PMP request form and a search warrant signed by a judge in Minnesota.

Please submit requests within 10 days of the warrant signature. Requests will be processed within 3 business days.

Helpful Tips - Please read before submitting a request!

Historical Records

Per MN Statute, only the previous 12 months of data (by date prescription was dispensed) is retained. The oldest dispensation date provided in a MN PMP report is 12 months before the date the request is processed by the program. If the search warrant indicates a time frame ending before the processing date, this will be the end date of the report. (e.g., warrant issued on 01/15/2023 specifies a timeframe of 12/01/2020 through 12/01/2022, the report returned will include dispenses starting 1/15/2022 through 12/01/2022.)

Alias/ Names

If the warrant language allows “or any known alias” of a subject, the program will perform a search that would include common shortened versions of names, nicknames, slight derivations, or minor differences in birthdays. If an alias is a completely different name and date of birth, it must be listed on the warrant for a search to be performed.

Specific Drugs

Results will reflect parameters allowed in warrant only. Warrants that restrict search results to a specific drug name, dosage, strength, etc. may result in inadvertently limited report results.  Depending on patient insurance and pharmacy stock, the pharmacy may substitute brand/generic or strength.

Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) Dispensations

OTPs do not currently report dispensations to the MN PMP. No OTP dispensations will be shown on a PMP dispensation reported generated by the MN PMP.
