Apology Letters
Some incarcerated people write letters of apology to victims and survivors of their crimes. Effective apology letters acknowledge fault, injury, pain, and responsibility, and do not make excuses or request forgiveness or pardon.
Department of Corrections (DOC) policy does not allow incarcerated people to send apology letters to victims directly or through non-DOC third parties. DOC Restorative Justice Program staff hold approved letters and deliver them only after they have been requested by their intended recipients.
