Volunteer Opportunities
The Minnesota Department of Corrections is honored to work alongside more than 1,500 community volunteers who help deliver cultural, educational, religious, self‑help, and transitional programming. These volunteers serve as mentors and positive role models, providing an essential connection between incarcerated individuals and the communities they will return to.
Volunteer Requirements
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to work with adults, and at least 21 to work with juveniles.
- Submit a Volunteer Application and an Offender Association Form.
- Successfully complete a criminal history check and inmate visiting review (volunteers cannot be on any incarcerated individual’s visiting list).
- Complete orientation training and annual recertification.
- Follow all Minnesota Department of Corrections policies and procedures.
If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please reach out to the facility where you’d like to volunteer (listed below). A staff member will let you know about current openings and, if there is a match, will guide you through the application and approval process.
