Pre-employment Process
All DOC job postings are announced on the State of Minnesota Careers Portal as positions open.

- After the job posting closes, human resources staff review applications and resumes, and the screening questions to determine who meets the minimum qualifications required for the position.
- The job posting(s) for the Trainee Corrections Officer position are reviewed weekly by the human resources staff to determine who meets the minimum qualifications required for the position. The application, resume, and screening questions are surveyed to verify that the minimum qualifications are met.
- Applicants who meet the required minimum qualifications are forwarded to the hiring manager for review and may be contacted to complete further assessments and/or invited to interview.
- Applicants for the Trainee Corrections Officer who meet the required minimum qualifications are invited to an interview. The interview format is a one-way video interview.
- If you do not meet the required minimum qualifications, you will receive an email indicating that you are no longer being considered for the position. You may appeal this determination by following the instructions in the email.
- If there is a large number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the pool of applicants may be narrowed based on the preferred qualifications.
- All applicants for the Trainee Corrections Officer who meet the minimum qualifications are invited to an interview.
- After the interviews are completed, the top candidate is selected.
- All applicants who pass the Trainee Corrections Officer interview will progress to the next step of the pre-employment process.
- Human Resources will have a conversation with you, outlining the contingent job offer details, before sending you the offer letter. If you accept the job offer, the required background screening components will be emailed to you to initiate. Each background screening component must be assessed as meeting DOC policy for hire before an official hire letter with a start date is prepared.
- The background screening (BGS) components consist of the following checks:
- Criminal history and predatory check
- Motor vehicle record review
- Justice-involved individuals (JII) association check
- Employment reference verification
- State/DOC records and employment reference check
- Occupational health clearance for tuberculosis and respirator use
- Other checks may be required depending on the position
- At any time in the selection process, you can check your application status.
- If you are no longer interested in a position for which you applied, you can select Withdraw on the My Job Applications page to be removed from consideration.
