Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older. If you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), you may be eligible for Medicare before age 65. Please see Medicare / Minnesota.gov (mn.gov) for more information about your choices under Medicare.
The federal government [Medicare.gov] is responsible for oversight and regulation of Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce (Commerce) and federal government are both responsible for the oversight and regulation of Medicare Supplement (sometimes called Medigap) plans, including Medicare Select, and Medicare Cost plans.
Commerce’s role in regulating Medicare Supplement, Select, and Cost plans involves reviewing the plan benefits and premium rates to ensure they comply with state and federal laws that protect consumers. Commerce does not set health insurance rates. Rather they review information submitted by the insurers to determine whether their proposed rates are justified.
