The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) oversees companies that provide essential services like electricity, gas, and landline telephone services in Minnesota. The Econ Unit looks at utility programs, policies, and tariffs to figure out how they impact consumers, the prices they pay, how reliable Minnesota's energy is, and whether proposals are consistent with state statute.

Analysts in the Econ Unit are experts on issues related to utility resource generation, distribution system planning, electric vehicles, solar net metering, interconnection, rate design, natural gas planning, cybersecurity, affordability programs and consumer protection, landline telephone services, and other policy issues. Econ Unit staff use their expertise to advise the Commissioners on decisions that aim to balance affordability, reliability, and consistency with state policy goals.
