CenterPoint NGIA Projects

CenterPoint received approval on October 9, 2024 for its Natural Gas Innovation Act Plan. In its plan, it will conduct 17 pilots and several research & development projects to test renewable natural gas, geothermal networks, heat pumps, and more. CenterPoint estimates that this will save 1.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide  (the equivalent of 150,000 households), and create 3,000 full-time jobs. A comprehensive approach to clean energy

The Natural Gas Innovation Plan was developed in response to Minnesota’s 2021 Natural Gas Innovation Act and includes a multi-faceted strategy to:

  • Incorporate alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and biogas

  • Enhance energy efficiency programs

  • Invest in emerging technologies for decarbonization

Collaborative efforts and approval process

The Commission's approval followed an extensive review process that incorporated input from a broad range of stakeholders, including:

  • Environmental advocacy organizations

  • Labor unions

  • Industry representatives

  • Community organizations

This collaborative approach ensures that the plan aligns with Minnesota's broader climate goals while balancing economic and social considerations.
