The POST Board adopted new rules effective May 30, 2023 for law enforcement officers related

to background investigations, psychological screening, minimum selection standards and new

standards of conduct. Questions about the new rules may be referred to

postboard.agency.docs@state.mn.us.

If you are a licensed law enforcement officer:

  •  If your license is inactive, see the rule requirements related to Inactive Licenses that may apply to you

If you conduct or manage background investigations:

  •  A full background investigation is required for every new officer even if they are currently licensed or employed by another agency. Background investigations expire after 6 months.
  •  Inform any outside consultants or contractors who conduct background investigations for your agency of the new requirements.

If you manage psychological evaluations of candidates for employment:

  •  A psychological evaluation is required for every new officer even if currently licensed. Psychological evaluations expire after a year. Review the new requirements for Psychological Screening.

If you recruit or supervise CSOs, cadets, or other trainees who may go on to become officers:

  • Be aware that there are new Minimum Selection Standards for licensure; including a limited exemption that may apply to CSOs, cadets, and agency trainees who were enrolled with the agency prior to January 1, 2023 and tested before 2028.

If you are the CLEO (chief law enforcement officer):
