License Renewal
General Information
• Peace officer and part-time peace officer licenses are valid for a three-year period with a renewal date of June 30th on the third year of licensure. (July 1, 2023-June 30, 2026)
• On March 1st of each year, POST emails a letter to all Chief Law Enforcement Officers and individual licensees who are due for renewal.
• Once the CE requirements are met, a $90 renewal fee must be paid. These steps must be completed prior to June 30th at 11:59 PM.
• Failure to meet the requirements and pay the renewal fee will result in license expiration and the inability to work as a licensed peace officer.
• Once a license is expired, the licensee will have to complete the restoration process.
• If an officer believes they have not received credit for a course, it is the officer's responsibility to contact the course sponsor to rectify the issue and have the sponsor submit an “Affidavit of Attendance" for the course that is missing, as necessary.
Active Licensees
Active peace officers and part-time peace officers must successfully complete 48 hours of law enforcement related continuing education every three years during their license renewal period.
Within those 48 hours, active officers must also have a minimum of 16 MN POST approved mandatory training (MLO) credits in the following categories to renew their license:
• Crisis Intervention and Mental Illness Crisis (6 credits, minimum),
• Autism (4 credits, minimum),
• Conflict Management and Mediation (1 credit, minimum),
• Recognizing and Valuing Community Diversity and Cultural Differences to Include Implicit Bias (1 credit, minimum),
• Crimes Motivated by Bias (1 credit, minimum),
The remaining 3 credits are elective and must be taken in any of these five categories listed above.
Inactive Licensees
Inactive peace officers and part-time peace officers must successfully complete 48 hours of law enforcement related general continuing education every three years during their license renewal period. Inactive officers are not required to have mandatory training (MLO) that is required of active officers.
