While Karl Jacob is busy shooting a film about deer hunting in northeastern Minnesota, his family is shooting deer.

Jacob's independent movie "Cold November" is currently being shot at locations near Hibbing and Goodland - in the same area where his family has coincidentally shot five deer.

"We're shooting the film, but everyone else is shooting deer," joked Jacob, whose filmmaking company Cold November LLC is shooting the movie. "I guess this movie is a good luck charm."

"Cold November" is the second independent movie that Jacob has filmed on the Iron Range.

A few years ago, Jacob shot "Pollywog." In that film, he used family members as actors.

"Cold November" is the second part of a trilogy that Jacob plans to shoot. "Cold November" is the story of a 12-year-old girls' rite of passage in shooting a deer for the first time.

"The idea for the movie all started from the first time I killed a deer," said Jacob, who has produced or consulted on the production of a number of films across the country. "It's kind of a time capsule that preserves my memories about deer hunting and kind of scrapbooks what life is about in northern Minnesota before it changes."

The film utilizes local actors. The film crew is 100 percent Minnesota-based with the exception of the director of photography.

A portion of the film will be filmed at Hibbing High School, something that he's always wanted to do, said Jacob.

Filming began in late October and continues until Thanksgiving. Plans are to release the movie next year.

"Cold November" is one of a handful of films that have been shot on the Iron Range in recent years.

Jacob, a 1997 graduate of Hibbing High School, says he tells filmmakers across the world about movie making opportunities on the Iron Range.

"There's a unique culture here that really hasn't been shown in films," said Jacob. "Whenever I'm talking with other filmmakers, I make them aware of the Snowbate and IRRRB (film) incentives, which are amazing. With a small film like this, it really helps us stretch our dollar further. It makes it unreal how much easier it is."

Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board is supporting production of the movie with a Film Production Incentive grant.
