Filmmaking gaining a spotlight in northeastern Minnesota

It's been a decade since film crews and actors like Woody Harrelson and Chris Mulkey were on the Iron Range making the movie "North Country."

Since then, the list of movies made in northeastern Minnesota has grown rapidly.

Ten additional movies have been shot within the region in recent years, all supported by an Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board Film Production Incentive Grant Program.

"It's taken a little while since North Country, but with the foresight of the IRRRB to offer the film incentive it's really increased" said Riki McManus, director of the Upper Minnesota Film Office. "Filmmakers are now seeing what a beautiful area this is and the diverse locations such as an ocean at Lake Superior, some of the pristine forests and rivers and the quaint towns."

North Country was the first film made in northeastern Minnesota supported by the IRRRB Film Production Incentive Program. The program offers filmmakers a 20 percent reimbursement on eligible expenditures made within the IRRRB service area, up to a maximum of $500,000 per production.

On Sunday, June 7, a ten-year anniversary celebration marking the 2005 release of North Country is being held at the Eveleth Auditorium.

It's the culmination of a week-long Duluth Superior Film Festival celebration. The celebration highlights films made in the Arrowhead region.

The North Country event includes a screening of the movie, an appearance by North Country actor Chris Mulkey, music, and a barbecue.

McManus says it's anticipated that an increasing number of additional films will be made in northeastern Minnesota thanks to the IRRRB incentive program and the region's natural beauty.

"We have some very nice projects popping that we can talk about at a later date," said McManus.

To train the wide variety of support workers needed to produce a film, a Twin Cities school is exploring the possibility of holding training classes in northeastern Minnesota, said McManus.

Films shot with support from the IRRRB Film Production Incentive Program are:
