ML graduation event (5)Last month, cheers of joy and accolades filled a packed room at Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF)-Moose Lake in honor of academic achievements by a group of incarcerated individuals.

Eight students earned their college degrees while another 14 achieved their GED. Six students were inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society after receiving nominations from their instructors. Career Tech program graduates included eight individuals from the Carpentry Program and 12 from the Networking Cabling Specialist Program. In total, 73 individuals increased scores to move up a level in their education journey.

Matt Hosmer, the Education Director at MCF-Moose Lake, spoke of the power of education to change the path and trajectory of people’s lives, and even their families. Hosmer commented, “I personally think one of the most rewarding things in Education is when individuals start to truly believe that they can be successful.”

Todd Warren, a tutor in for C-Tech (Cabling Technology), spoke about how monumental of a milestone it is for individuals to be recognized for their achievements in education and how humbling it was for him to receive that, even at an older age and away from the traditional setting. Previously in the DOC, he has received certifications for vocational – small engines, critical thinking skills, and OSHA 10 certification. Warren went on to say, “we should be proud of our accomplishments as well as mindful of those who have helped us along the way. While I have graduated from various schools and programs over the decades, this was the first event where I donned cap and gown. I didn’t think that hearing my name called, walking the stage, receiving recognition and shaking hands would be that big of a deal, but as I was walking back to my seat, it all sort of hit me. It was poignant and I’m grateful for the opportunities and the people. There’s something to be said about donning the cap and gown… Walking across the stage, shaking hands and receiving your diploma… It truly is a rite of passage.”
