Dept. of Corrections Staff Get Moving to Benefit Special Olympics

7/26/2023 1:53:08 PM

Staff from the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) recently hit the pavement for a good cause by taking part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg event (LETR), benefiting Special Olympics Minnesota.

The DOC was represented by staff from the Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF)-Red Wing, MCF-Lino Lakes, and MCF-Rush City, at torch run events in their local areas in late June. DOC participants took part by either running, biking, or walking.

The DOC has a long history of supporting the LETR activities, along with other events which benefit the Special Olympics. Also, DOC staff throughout the agency take part in Polar Plunge activities each winter.

Sgt. Jarred Pullis from MCF-Lino Lakes has been involved with the LETR program for 18 years. Asked what this event means to him, Pullis stated: “The simple answer is inclusion.” He continued, “Including those with intellectual disabilities in every aspect of “normal” day to day life activities.”

Pullis’ involvement over the years has grown to the point where he now serves as a member at large on the LETR Executive Council for Special Olympics MN.

“The Special Olympics provides an opportunity for those with a disability to pursue their dreams and participate in competition,” said Chris Barth, Safety Administrator at MCF-Red Wing. “It is a privilege and honor to support Special Olympics with the annual Torch Run.”
