Reinstatement of Expired Certifications

If your EMS certification has expired, you may still be eligible for reinstatement based on when your credential lapsed. This does not apply to EMR registrations.

Final Reinstatement Opportunity for Expired Certifications (2014–2024)

Deadline: December 31, 2025

From July 1, 2024 through December 31, 2025, individuals whose certification expired more than four years ago but less than ten years ago (specifically between 2014 and 2020) may qualify for reinstatement under a temporary provision.

This option requires:

  • Completion of appropriate training within the past 24 months
  • A director-approved application
  • A recommendation from an ambulance service medical director

This temporary reinstatement pathway expires December 31, 2025. After that date, reinstatement is only available for certifications expired less than four years, per standard statute.

Certification Reinstatement After January 1, 2026

Reinstatement is governed by Minnesota Statute. The process depends on how long it has been since your certification expired.

If less than four years have passed, you may reinstate your certification by submitting:

  • Evidence of completed continuing education equivalent to renewal requirements, and
  • A director-approved application form

If more than four years have passed you are not eligible for reinstatement and must complete the initial certification process, including:

  • An OEMS-approved education program
  • Passing written and practical exams
  • Submission of a new application

Other Certification Types
