Access improvements are among bonding requests

November 2023
By Jane McClure

The article discusses the upcoming 2024 legislative session in Minnesota and the bonding requests being considered, particularly those related to accessibility improvements in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Lawmakers and their staff members are touring sites with bonding requests, including state buildings, colleges, university facilities, state parks, and facilities serving people with disabilities.

Bonding years, like 2024, focus on infrastructure projects, and a surplus of around $2.4 billion increases the potential for funding accessibility upgrades. Requests total almost $7.4 billion statewide, with needs ranging from ADA-focused upgrades at the state capitol tunnel to improvements at the University of Minnesota-Morris Multi-Ethnic Resource Center.

Disability-specific facility requests cover areas such as the Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf and Blind, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Natural Resources for state parks, and the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency for housing infrastructure, including permanent supportive housing for people with disabilities.
