The article discusses the challenges related to broadband access faced by many Minnesotans with disabilities. The Minnesota Department of Broadband Development estimates that around 291,000 households lack access to wireline broadband, creating disparities in high-speed internet availability.
The limitations of wireless options due to weather and terrain, along with geographical challenges, contribute to speed limitations and increased costs for connecting rural households. Affordability, lack of suitable devices, and digital skills are identified as barriers for individuals with disabilities in accessing broadband.

The Statewide Independent Living Council proposes policy recommendations, including redefining the FCC definition of broadband, requiring providers to promote affordability programs, reclassifying broadband as a telecommunications service, and promoting adaptive devices for people with disabilities.
Despite existing programs and grants to expand broadband access, service gaps persist, impacting various aspects of life, including work, education, and healthcare.
