Since 2019, Olmsted County in Minnesota has been providing training for jail and law enforcement staff to be more mindful of individuals with disabilities. Capt. Macey Tesmer highlighted the challenges of finding appropriate training materials and courses but emphasized the importance of addressing issues like strip searches with care.
The program includes a manual with pictures to explain procedures to detainees and the availability of social workers and items like fidget spinners and weighted blankets to assist those with disabilities, particularly in instances where miscommunication may occur due to conditions like autism. The training has proven successful, with Olmsted County personnel extending assistance to other law enforcement agencies beyond the jail setting.
