Minnesota mourns the loss of two disability rights champions, David Durenberger and Lee Greenfield. Durenberger, a former Republican U.S. Senator, played a key role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and was known for his bipartisan approach.
Lee Greenfield, a DFLer and 11-term Minnesota House member, was a tireless advocate for disability rights and contributed significantly to establishing MinnesotaCare, the state's healthcare system focused on care access for all. Greenfield, who passed away at 81, also worked on disability-related bills, nursing home issues, and the protection of vulnerable adults from abuse.
Durenberger, who died at 88, emphasized the importance of ADA, recalling its impact and the collaboration between Republicans and Democrats for its passage. Both champions left lasting legacies in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.
