Highland Popcorn, a small business set to employ young people with disabilities, faces uncertainty after the University of St. Thomas (UST) terminated their proposed partnership to use part of the campus building. UST cited a lack of resources to support Highland Popcorn's needs and shifted priorities.
Supporters, who had invested private funds and time, are now searching for an alternative space. Highland Popcorn, led by Shamus O'Meara, expressed shock at the abrupt decision, emphasizing the setback in providing job opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
UST alumni, city officials, and disability service provider MSS expressed disappointment and hope for an alternative site for Highland Popcorn. Postscript: Highland Popcorn will make its new storefront a reality February 2024 in Highland Village Center on Ford Parkway thanks to a partnership with the Lunds & Byerly's Highland Bridge.
