The closure of day programs and employment services due to COVID-19 has created significant challenges for organizations serving people with disabilities in Minnesota. With an estimated 30,000 individuals utilizing day services, the financial strain on organizations, which are paid only when services are provided, has become critical. Fixed costs such as rent, utilities, and staff health insurance continue, exacerbating the financial burden.
Many providers hope to reopen in May, but uncertainty remains about covering costs during the closure period. Emergency funding is sought from the Minnesota Legislature to address immediate needs and explore innovative ways to serve clients.
