Progress on disability issues at risk due to pandemic

May 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainties for Minnesotans with disabilities, particularly with the early adjournment of the Minnesota Legislature until April 14. Governor Tim Walz issued two executive orders on March 20 to provide flexibility for serving vulnerable Minnesotans during the pandemic, receiving praise from disability advocacy organizations.

These providers support over 26,000 Minnesotans with disabilities daily and operate as nonprofits with limited cash reserves. The suspension of services since March 17 has led to financial difficulties, as fixed costs such as rent, utilities, and vehicle payments continue despite the lack of revenue.

Urgent emergency funding is requested from the state legislature and the Minnesota Department of Human Services to help these crucial community disability services weather the crisis and ensure their viability for the future.
