Discipline Unit Intern
Open to Upper-level Undergraduate Students
Location: Minnesota Correctional Facility - Stillwater
MCF-STW was built in 1914 and is the state's largest close-security facility for adult male felons. Average daily population is 1,277 and full-time staff size is approximately 550. The facility's two primary missions are to protect the public by incarcerating serious, chronic and dangerous offenders and to provide industrial, academic, vocation and rehabilitative opportunities to inmates.
Internship Description: The intern will obtain knowledge and understanding of how the criminal justice system works in general, specifically related to the area of corrections. The intern will benefit from this experience by learning investigative techniques within a correctional environment in the areas of institution rule violations. Interns will observe and assist staff with gathering information and interviewing witnesses. Provide assistance in evidence collection and preservation. Prepare cases and participate in Administrative Due Process hearings. Assist in waiver negotiations with inmates.
Supervision: Interns will be supervised by the Discipline Unit Supervisor.
Requirements: Interns must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program, which offers course credit for internships. Applicants should have completed introductory course work in criminal justice, criminology, corrections, psychology, sociology, social work or related field. Intern must clear a security background check and follow department policies and procedures.
Length of Internship: 12 weeks/ 1 semester, 20 hours per week minimum.
