What is the State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate?

9/12/2023 9:53:16 AM

Did you get a direct deposit from the State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate Program? Are you wondering what this money is for?

In May, the Minnesota State Legislature approved a one-time tax rebate of:

  • $260 for individuals whose adjusted gross income was $75,000 or less.
  • $520 for married couples filing a joint return whose adjusted gross income was $150,000 or less.
  • Another $260 for each dependent claimed on your return, up to three dependents ($780).

Who gets this rebate?

You get this rebate if:

  • You were a Minnesota resident in 2021.
  • You filed either:
    • 2021 Form M1, Minnesota Individual Income Tax or
    • 2021 Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund by December 31, 2022.
  • You had 2021 adjusted gross income (line 1 of Form M1 or Form M1PR) of
    • $150,000 or less for married joint filers
    • $75,000 or less for all other filers.
  • You were not claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 Minnesota income tax return.

What happens next?

The Minnesota Department of Revenue will send the rebate payment to the bank account or the mailing address on your 2021 income tax or property tax refund return.

  • Direct deposit: Payments will be deposited in your bank account starting in late-August. The payment will say "State of Minnesota 2021 Tax Rebate Program" on your bank statement.
  • Paper check: Checks will be mailed in a plain white envelope starting in early September. All checks should be mailed out by the end of September.

If you do not get a rebate by October, and you think you should get a rebate, contact the Minnesota Department of Revenue by email or phone:
