Charlie Lakin, former director of the University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration (ICI) Research and Training Center on Community Living, received the university's highest alumni honor, the Outstanding Achievement Award, at a June 6 ceremony.
Recognized for more than 30 years of transformative work in disability services, Lakin helped establish ICI as a leading center for research and training, contributing to the national shift from institutional care to community living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Throughout his career, Lakin authored or co-authored 300 publications and led significant research projects. After retiring from the University of Minnesota, he directed the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research at the U.S. Department of Education from 2011 to 2014. His work has influenced disability policy and practice both nationally and internationally.

At the ceremony, colleagues and dignitaries—including former University President Robert Bruininks, Amy Hewitt, and leaders from national disability organizations—praised Lakin's enduring impact, his commitment to dignity and respect for people with disabilities, and his mentorship of generations of researchers and practitioners. Lakin emphasized that his accomplishments were a collective effort, crediting his colleagues and the supportive environment at ICI. The award reflects his lasting contributions to improving independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families.
