Laura Baker and her school left a lasting legacy

December 2022
By Jane McClure

The Laura Baker Services Association (LBSA), celebrating its 125th year, has evolved from a private boarding school founded by Laura Belle Baker in 1897 into a diverse nonprofit supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Baker's commitment to education led her to establish a school in Minneapolis in 1897 and relocate to Northfield a year later.

The school, known for its progressive methods, faced a tax fight in 1920 but was recognized for its invaluable contributions to the community. Baker's legacy continued with her niece, Laura Baker Millis, who took over in 1938, and the LBSA persists in providing meaningful services today.
