Tim Benjamin was very dedicated to disability rights, journalism

August 2022
By Jane McClure

Tim Benjamin, a dedicated advocate for Minnesota's disability community, passed away at 69. Benjamin, who worked at Access Press for over two decades, played a crucial role in using journalism to bring positive changes for people with disabilities.

A quadriplegic since a 1974 diving accident, Tim's involvement with Access Press began through a serendipitous meeting with the founding editor, Charlie Smith Jr. He served as executive director and editor of Access Press for 19 years, focusing on disability-focused journalism and addressing issues like employment and the personal care attendant crisis.

Despite partially retiring in 2020, Tim continued to contribute through writing columns and consulting work, leaving a lasting impact on disability advocacy.
