Personal care assistant wage increase has finally taken effect

November 2021

Starting October 1, Personal Care Assistant (PCA) workers in Minnesota will experience increased wages and additional benefits. The statewide minimum wage for PCAs rose from $13.25 to $14.40 per hour on October 1, with another increase to $15.25 scheduled for July 1, 2022.

This development follows an agreement reached during the 2021 legislative session between the state and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), recently granted federal approval. PCAs perform essential tasks for individuals with disabilities, and the pay increase aims to address challenges that have led to a workforce shortage in this field.

The agreement also includes benefits such as paid time off, increased paid holidays, and funding for training opportunities, impacting over 40,000 PCAs in the state.

"Personal care assistants help Minnesotans with disabilities live fulfilling and independent lives, and I've had the privilege of seeing firsthand just how hard that work can be," said Gov. Tim Walz. "The Minnesotans who dedicate their lives to this important work are heroes, and I am proud that this wage increase helps recognize the vital role they play in the lives of people across the state."
