Remembering Our Rick: Cardenas a Community "Hero"

April 2021
By Jane McClure

Rick Cardenas, a revered leader in Minnesota's disability community, passed away on March 13 at the age of 79 after a stroke. Described as a compassionate, fearless, and larger-than-life figure, Cardenas tirelessly advocated for disability rights, working extensively on initiatives like the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Minnesota Olmstead Plan, and the Minnesota Human Rights Act.

Recognized for his tenacity and commitment, he was a maverick in fighting against injustice and discrimination. Cardenas, who understood the intersectionality of race and disability, faced racial discrimination himself.

Born in 1942, he became a quadriplegic in 1960 after a car accident and went on to contribute significantly to his community. His activism extended to education, workers' rights, and political engagement, making him a mentor and hero in the disability rights movement.

Cardenas's legacy includes his involvement in independent living, transit accessibility, and Remembering With Dignity, which sought justice for those who lived in brutal conditions at state institutions. His passing leaves a significant void, with many remembering him as a giant in disability rights advocacy.
