2015: 25th Anniversary of the ADA
Reflections
On the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, it seems only fitting that we remember the steps taken, the arguments won, and the victories savored in the long-embattled fight for the rights of people with developmental disabilities.
Senators David Durenberger (MN) and Tom Harkin (IA) introduced the Americans with Disabilities Act to the Senate in the 101st Congress on May 9, 1989.
Durenberger looks back on its signing in 1990 as a highlight of his career. "As a principal co-sponsor, I focused on persuading employers who feared they couldn't afford mandated access that they couldn't afford not to provide it."
