Continuing Education

Continuing Education Requirements - All Professions

Licensees are asked to attest to completion of required continuing education by reporting to the Board at renewal time at the end of the continuing education cycle. Continuing education documentation must be retained by each licensee in the event they are selected for an audit.

Acupuncturists

Licensees issued an acupuncture license under the general requirements must provide documentation of current NCCAOM certification. Licensees issued an acupuncture license by reciprocity or by equivalency during transitional period must meet the same NCCAOM professional development activity requirements as those licensed under the general requirements.

Athletic Trainers

Starting July 1, 2018, licensees must meet the professional development requirements of the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer in order to maintain BOC certification. These requirements may be met through a board-approved continuing education program.

Genetic Counselors
Naturopathic Doctors

Each registered naturopathic doctor must complete at least 25 contact hours of Board-approved continuing education each year as a condition of registration renewal. The Board approves continuing education programs that have been approved for continuing education credit by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, the American Chiropractic Association, the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Professional Education, the American Pharmacists Association or any of their constituent state associations, or an organization approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. At least 5 hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics. Registrant may apply no more than five hours of practice management to a one-year reporting period and no more than 15 hours to any single subject area.

Physicians

Each licensed physician must obtain 75 hours of continuing medical education (CME) category 1 credit every three years as a condition of licensure renewal. The Board accepts (re)certification or current Maintenance of Competency issued by ABMS, RCPSC or AOA in lieu of CME. Newly licensed physicians commence their three year cycle on their birth month following the initial date of licensure. Physicians under Emeritus registration and licensees in full-time residency or fellowship training at a professionally accredited facility are exempt from the continuing medical education requirement.

Physician Assistants

Each licensed physician assistant must obtain 50 contact hours of Category 1 continuing education every two years or meet standards through current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants certifications as a condition of licensure renewal.

Respiratory Therapists
Traditional Midwives

All licensed traditional midwives must provide evidence every three years of 30 contact hours of board-approved continuing education. At least five contact hours must involve adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation and either infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation or neonatal advanced life support.
