Interstate Medical Licensure Compact

Minnesota’s Legislature unanimously passed the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact; it was signed by the governor in May 2015. It is an expedited licensure process for eligible physicians that improves license portability and increases patient access to care. Other states and U.S. territories that have joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact include: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Guam, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire,  North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Minnesota's Commissioners to Attend Inaugural Meeting of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission, October 27-28, 2015

The State of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation will host the first meeting of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission on October 27 and 28, 2015, at the Michael A. Bilandic Building in Chicago.  Minnesota is among eleven states that have enacted the Compact.  Governor Mark Dayton appointed Jon Thomas, M.D., and Ruth Martinez, M.A., as Commissioners to represent Minnesota on the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission.  Dr. Thomas, an Otolaryngologist and Chief Operating Officer of Ear, Nose, and Throat SpecialtyCare of Minnesota, is a current member of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and serves on the Board’s Licensure Committee.  Ms. Martinez is Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. 

The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact serves to improve license portability and access to health care across state lines. The expedited pathway to licensure created by the Compact facilitates multistate and interstate medical practice by physicians, expands patient access to care, and preserves each state’s regulatory authority to protect the public.
