PELSB Offering Mentorship Train-the-Trainer Sessions

To assist schools and school districts with implementing the new Minnesota teacher mentorship requirements, PELSB is offering a two-day Train-the-trainer Teacher Mentorship Training program (“Training Program”) August 6-7, 2019. This train-the-trainer program is designed for educators who will be responsible for developing and implementing a teacher mentorship program in their school or district and is compliant with the new MN Statute. To apply, please complete the application form by June 21

Timeline for applications and selection of participants:

  • Applications open: May 16, 2019
  • Application deadline: June 21, 2019
  • Notification of acceptance: July 8, 2019
  • Training Program: August 6 & 7, 2019

The Training Program application will be used to identify up to 30 current teacher mentors for the two-day Training Program.

By the end of the two-day Training Program selected participants will: 

  • know the MN Statute Mentorship Program Requirements. 
  • know key factors for an effective and positive mentor/mentee relationship. 
  • learn approaches to mentoring and coaching strategies. 
  • learn how to use data for teaching and learning and developing data-driven conversations.
  • learn how to identify teachers who would be effective mentors.
  • gain experience developing plans for implementing a mentorship program. 
  • learn about resources and support available to them as mentor trainers.
  • learn how to navigate peer-to-peer conversations where actual or perceived power differentials may exist due to position/role, seniority, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ identity, or other factors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Who should apply? 

  • Required experience: Any currently Tier 3 or Tier 4, or Standard licensed teacher, who is not currently on an improvement plan, with at least 5 years of experience in classroom instruction. 
  • Preferred experience: Teachers with past experience as a mentor or coach for adults or leadership role within the school building or district.

What is a Tier 3 or Tier 4 licensure? 

How will participants be selected? 

  • All applications will be reviewed for level of teaching and mentorship experience and geographic location. To further help create an inclusive and diverse group of participants for the Training Program the application asks  voluntary demographic questions on race/ethnicity and LGBTQ identity. All  individual responses to the voluntary demographic questions will be confidential and the data only available to NARA staff for the purposes of reviewing applications. Any demographic data shared with PELSB will be at de-identified and aggregate level only for the purposes of reporting the diversity of the applicant pool.

When are applications due? 

  • Friday, June 21, 2019 

When will applicants know if they have been accepted into the training program? 

  • All applicants will be notified by Monday, July 8 if they have been accepted into the Training Program.

How much does the training cost? 

The training is free to participants. In addition, PELSB will pay participants a small stipend for participating, and will also provide or reimburse participants for travel expenses (hotel, meals and mileage reimbursement).
