Other Ombudsperson Offices and Complaint Bodies

Minnesota Ombudsperson Offices

  • Office of Ombudsperson for Families  works to resolve complaints from families who have been negatively impacted by child welfare social service agencies. Their office includes an Ombudsperson for African American families, Ombudsperson for Asian Pacific families, and an Ombudsperson for Spanish Speaking Families.
  • Office of the Ombudsperson for American Indian Families monitors compliance with all laws governing child protection and placement, public education, and housing issues related to child protection that impact American Indian and Alaska Native children and their families.
  • Office of the Ombuds for Corrections has the authority to take and investigate complaints from or about any Department of Corrections’ staff or facility charged with the care and custody of inmates and any regional or local correctional facility licensed by the DOC in Minnesota.
  • Ombuds for Family Child Care Providers assists family child care providers with licensing, compliance, and other issues facing family child care providers.
  • Office of Ombudsman for Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities promotes the highest attainable standards of treatment, competence, efficiency, and justice for persons receiving services for mental illness, developmental disabilities, chemical dependency, or emotional disturbance.
  • Office of the Ombuds for Family Child Care Providers: Assists family child care providers with licensing, compliance, and other family child care issues. The ombuds is an independent resource and advocate for reliable information and expert guidance regarding family child care.

Other Minnesota Boards and Offices

  • Board on Judicial Standards responds to complaints about Minnesota state court judges for violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct.
  • Child Safety and Permanency Constituent Services handles concerns about the state’s child protection system, not related to an individual concern. Call 651-431-6551or email dhs.child.safety-permanency@state.mn.us.
  • Guardian ad Litem Board  handles complaints related to the conduct of Guardians ad Litem.
  • Lawyers Professional Responsibilities Board  handles complaints of unprofessional conduct against Minnesota lawyers and investigates and prosecutes complaints warranting professional discipline.
  • MN Board of Social Work  handles complaints against individuals licensed with the Board of Social Work.  *The Board has no authority over unlicensed county social workers, as social work licensure for individuals employed with the county is voluntary under Minnesota law.
  • Minnesota Department of Human Rights  handles complaints regarding discrimination in areas such as employment, housing, and education based on protected class such as race, religion, and disability.
  • Office of Justice Programs  provides information and assistance to crime victims and provides county specific referrals throughout the State of Minnesota.
