Not including the application itself and the tax clearance form, you will need to have official transcripts of your doctoral degree, and an APA accreditation letter (if applicable) sent directly to the Board. If other documentation is necessary, the Board will contact you. This documentation becomes a part of your applicant file, and it is not necessary to send it again to support subsequent exam or licensure applications.

The APA accreditation letter must appear on official letterhead of the degree granting institution and be written by the doctoral program Training Program Director or Director of Clinical Training. The content of the letter must include the applicant’s legal name as well as the date the applicant’s degree was conferred. Additionally, the letter must state the duration of time the doctoral program has been APA accredited to include the first date of accreditation. The letter is required to be primary sourced; sent directly by the institution’s Training Program Director or Director of Clinical Training to the Board of Psychology. The Board does accept primary sourced letters via email: psychboard.license@state.mn.us

The Board requires applicants pass a national exam in psychology, which is the EPPP, Part 1. Applicants may contact ASPPB directly with specific questions of the EPPP Part 2.

Once an application for licensure is submitted and the FBI and BCA fees have been satisfied, applicants will receive an email from the Criminal Background Check Program (CBCP) that will include consent forms and instructions for completing the packet of information. The CBCP website provides additional information about the background study process. The email you receive will not come from the Minnesota Board of Psychology and will be sent directly from: criminal.background.check@state.mn.us. It is suggested you flag this email address, so it does not go to spam. 

You may be fingerprinted at a facility near you, fingerprinting in Minnesota is not required. If you have any specific questions about the background check process or fingerprinting, please contact the CBCP Program directly.

When completing an initial application for licensure, applicants will provide the primary supervisor’s contact information, the location and specific dates of the supervised experience, and the nature of duties performed as it relates to the practice of psychology. Once one full year of supervision has been completed, Board Staff will contact the primary supervisor directly to provide an attestation. This information will be used to certify the requirements in Minnesota Administrative Statute 148.925 and Minnesota Administrative Rule 7200.2000 have been met. The Board does not require applicants to submit supervision logs, unless it is specifically requested.

The Supervision Agreement is an optional tool available to applicants who are starting their post-doctoral experience. The agreement allows the Board to evaluate an applicant’s post-doctoral experience before the experience has begun, and ensures the applicant and supervisor understand the statutory requirements of the post-doctoral experience. The applicant works with a Board staff member who reviews the agreement and may offer clarification about the applicable rules and statutes that apply to the Supervision Agreement. The agreement is not an employment contract, rather it should be considered a tool to assist the applicant in the licensure process. Applicants that elect to complete a supervision agreement and have this added to their application must satisfy the $50 fee.
