Xcel Energy's Natural Gas Innovation Plans
In February 2025, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved Xcel Energy’s first-ever Natural Gas Innovation Plan, marking a significant step in advancing cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions in Minnesota. The plan is designed to reduce or avoid at least 687,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, explore innovative technologies, and support the state’s transition to a lower-carbon energy future.
A comprehensive approach to clean energy
The Natural Gas Innovation Plan was developed in response to Minnesota’s 2021 Natural Gas Innovation Act and includes a multi-faceted strategy to:
-
Incorporate alternative fuels, such as hydrogen and biogas
-
Enhance energy efficiency programs
-
Invest in emerging technologies for decarbonization
Collaborative efforts and approval process
The Commission's approval followed an extensive review process that incorporated input from a broad range of stakeholders, including:
-
Environmental advocacy organizations
-
Labor unions
-
Industry representatives
-
Community organizations
This collaborative approach ensures that the plan aligns with Minnesota's broader climate goals while balancing economic and social considerations.
Approved pilot projects
Xcel Energy's plan includes 13 pilot programs and seven research and development projects. The following table outlines the pilot projects included in Xcel Energy’s plan:
