What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that causes significant challenges in social interaction, communication and behavior.

As a person who is diagnosed with autism, as they continue to grow throughout their life, there will be changing needs. Minnesota is dedicated to supporting people with autism along with their family members, caregivers and those who are surrounded by them on a daily basis.

In Minnesota, county public health or social services or tribal agencies can provide local information and referrals, including advocacy, child care, community resources, county services, education and medical specialists.

People with ASD or related conditions often need supports and services to learn and develop certain skills. Depending on their symptoms and severity, they may benefit from different types of services delivered in different types of places.
