Ogichidaakwe (Selena Garza)

Council Member (She/Her)
Selena (Ogichidaakwe) Garza (they/she) is a two-spirit advocate from the Red Lake Nation, passionately dedicated to uplifting LGBTQIA2S+ Minnesotans in their role as a board member with LGBTQIA2S+ Minnesotans. With a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice Studies and a second Bachelor’s in Sociology from the University of North Dakota, as well as a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Selena is currently completing their Chemical Dependency degree at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. Their professional journey includes roles as an ICWA reunification specialist, qualified expert witness, and Clinical Director at Gwayakochige Wigamig Safe Harbor Youth Shelter, where they now serve as Clinical Supervisor at Red Lake Chemical Health Programs. However, the bulk of their journey in advocacy has been shaped by community and hearing others share their stories; this sparked a desire to address the injustices faced by those who, like themselves, were treated differently for embracing their full selves. Growing up in a religious family deeply influenced by the boarding school era, they learned to challenge restrictive norms and advocate for authenticity. With a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage, Oghichidaakwe works to promote the understanding of diverse gender identities within their community, striving to create spaces for connection and dialogue that foster personal growth and builds on the capacity to cultivate joy.
