Computer-Based Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
Minnesota applicants must apply to the Board for approval to take the FE examination. Following approval, applicants must register with NCEES for the FE exam. After you have registered with NCEES, the Board is notified to confirm approval before applicants can schedule the date they choose to sit for the exam.
Computer-Based Testing (“CBT”) specifics:
The computer-based FE exam will be administered at approved Pearson VUE testing centers.
Applicants must apply to the Board for approval for each exam attempt. Once approved by the Board, examinees register with NCEES.
There will be four testing windows for the FE exams annually. Each of these windows will last two months, with a month between them. Therefore, exam appointments will be available in January and February, April and May, July and August, and October and November.
Candidates for a CBT exam may take the exam one time per testing window and no more than three times in a 12-month period.
Candidates will be required to pay NCEES directly for all exam-related fees. This will be included as part of the online registration process and will require payment with MasterCard or Visa.
The FE exams will be six hours in length, which will include a tutorial, breaks, the exam, and a brief survey at the conclusion of the exam.
The FE exams will continue to be closed book. Supplied reference material for the exams will be electronic and will be available on the NCEES website.
Examinees will be allowed to bring and use NCEES-approved calculators on CBT exams.
Sample exams for the computer-based FE are available for purchase through NCEES.
Results will be released directly to the examinee, typically within 48 hours. The Board will follow-up with a letter confirming the exam results and notifying the applicant of the next steps.
Applicants who fail the examination must submit a new application and application fee to the Board for approval prior to registering with NCEES to retake the examination.
