How to Apply

Find out how to apply for a pardon or commutation below. Get information on having the initial waiting period waived, or request permission to reapply early after a denial.

For a Pardon

A pardon sets aside a criminal conviction, restoring a person’s rights and removing many consequences of that conviction.

For Commutation

A commutation is changing a criminal sentence to be less severe.

Waiver of the Initial Waiting Period

Pardons and commutations both have waiting periods applicants must meet in order to apply. However, applicants can request a waiver of the initial waiting period.

Permission to Reapply Early After a Denial

After applying for a clemency and getting rejected, there is a reapplication waiting period. Applicants may be able to request permission to reapply before the waiting period ends.
