Resources for Residents

Minnesota Attorney General’s Office – “Condominium & Townhouse Associations” page offers plain language guidance on association and owner responsibilities.

Minnesota State Law Library – “Homeowners’ Associations / Common Interest Communities”: links to statutes, key topics, and self help for owners.

Working Group on Common Interest Communities and Homeowners Associations - This group was created by an act of the Minnesota legislature to study the prevalence and impact of CICs and HOAs in Minnesota and how the laws regulating CICs and HOAs help homeowners and tenants access safe and affordable housing. The group expired in February 2025. 

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity - Free guides and educational materials – e.g., “HOA 101: What Minnesota Homeowners Need to Know” from Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. 

Minnesota State Bar Association - Public access to a lawyer directory, lawyer referral service, free or low-cost legal services, and information to determine if a lawyer is in good standing, verify their malpractice insurance, or file a complaint. 

LawHelpMN.org - This website has a self-help library containing information on a variety of legal topics and provides a database of low-income legal services providers and legal advice clinics in Minnesota.

Resources for Homeowners Association Boards

Minnesota Housing - Minnesota Housing supports HOAs and CICs by promoting affordable housing, providing guidance on financing, and assisting with community development initiatives. 

Community Associations Institute - Provides education, networking, and certification opportunities for managers, association board members, vendors, and professionals.
