The Military Veterans Initiative at the Carlson School of Management is led by Charles Altman, a retired U.S. Navy commander who dedicated nearly three decades to military service. Altman knows too well the difficulty of transitioning from active duty to civilian life.
With nearly 300,000 Veterans transitioning from active military service to civilian life in the United States each year, there is vast potential for strong leaders to enter the workforce. However, I have personally seen many service members and Veterans struggle to obtain a position equal to their experience and education, while others can’t find a job at all. When you walk out of one professional life and into another, it’s cold. The Carlson School wants to extend a warm welcome for these Veterans, and ease the transition to a new career.
“Hire Minnesota’s Veterans”… Perhaps you saw this campaign highlighted on a billboard while driving through the Twin Cities, read about it in the paper, or caught it on the evening news. Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed July “Hire a Veteran Month” to create awareness among Minnesotans of the tremendous talent pool that exists among the Veteran population right here in Minnesota. Even though July and “Hire a Veteran Month” have come to a close, the opportunity and the need for Minnesota companies to invest in Veterans remains great.
August has arrived... the days are getting shorter, nights somewhat cooler and the kids are starting to think about returning to school. All of this gives meaning to the phrase “the Circle of Life!”
For us at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs it also means starting to get ready for the next legislative session. Last year’s session helped the Department reposition itself in order to better serve Minnesota’s Veterans and their families, whether that be through our staff or the County Veterans Service Office (CVSO) grants or supporting our Veterans Service Organizations (VSO’s).
