Employer Registration Phase Timeline
Timeline of Employer Required Enrollment Waves
At the Program's launch of January 19, 2026 employers doing business in Minnesota with 5 or more employees and employing workers receiving Minnesota taxable income received either an email or postal letter from the record keeper, Vestwell, and were provided login information and a unique access code to the program portal at securechoice.mn.gov. If an employer did not receive or lost their unique access code, they can request for it to be resent using their FEIN and validations.
Employers are required under Minnesota state law to enroll in the Minnesota Secure Choice Retirement Program and offer the program to all of their part-time and full-time employees receiving Minnesota taxable wages OR file for an exemption if the organization already offers a qualified retirement program to employees. Employers are allowed to enroll or file an exemption at any time preceding their enrollment deadline but must enroll or file an exemption no later than the compliance deadline outlined above based on total employee count as determined by data available to the Program as of January 2026.
Employer Responsibilities
Employers have 3 main responsibilities to maintain compliance with the Secure Choice Retirement Program and Minnesota State law:
- Enroll or exempt your organization before your required enrollment deadline
- Consistently and regularly remit payroll contributions to the Program for all of your participating employees
- Keep your employee rolls current and up-to-date by onboarding and offboarding any new hires or departures
