[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, Governor Tim Walz, and his son Gus, introduced Minnesotans to the newest member of their family: Scout, a three-month-old Black Lab Mix. When Governor Walz announced his campaign in March of 2017, he and his wife, Gwen, promised their son Gus that the family would adopt a dog if Walz won the election. The moment the election was called, Gus famously exclaimed , “I get a dog!” and he has been reminding his parents of that promise ever since.
Minnesotans have been without a First Dog since the Governor took office in January. After months of searching, Governor Walz, the First Lady, and Gus adopted Scout over Labor Day Weekend from Midwest Animal Rescue & Services. Scout comes to the Minnesota Governor’s Residence after he was discovered in a box, abandoned in Oklahoma. Scout is adjusting to his new home in St. Paul and having fun exploring the historic Governor’s Residence. While the Walz family cat, Afton, is not happy to share the spotlight , the Walz family is thrilled they were able to rescue Scout and give him a new home in Minnesota.
“Politicians make a lot of promises on the campaign trail, but none bigger than one I made to my kids. I’m excited to announce that Minnesota has a new First Dog and more importantly, I fulfilled my commitment to get my son a dog if I was elected Governor,” said Governor Tim Walz. “I’m proud that Minnesota’s First Dog is a rescue dog, and I hope Scout—who has been a very good boy—serves as reminder for Minnesotans that there are a lot of pups waiting to be adopted.”
