Today we take time to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This day serves as a day of reflection, celebration, and service for people in Minnesota, the United States, and throughout the world. Dr. King called for us to envision a world with equal justice for all people under the law. His life and legacy to fight for civil rights is one that left our nation forever changed for the better.
As I reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, I think about the progress people of African heritage have made in the U.S. and the work that’s yet to be done for equality. We have the responsibility to carry Dr. King’s efforts forward to advance equity and demand human rights for all. His legacy represents purpose and action for us at the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. Dr. King once famously said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” As America continues to reckon with racism, division, and inequality, we must continue to fight for what is right in order to advance.
