[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz today announced that the State of Minnesota has received the top grade for its use of digital technology from the Center for Digital Government (CDG). Minnesota received an overall grade of A in the 2022 Digital States Survey and ranked third in the nation for exemplary work in workforce planning.

“We want to provide the best government that we can for Minnesotans, and we use technology to deliver those important services in a way that is centered around the people who need them most,” said Governor Walz. “I am proud that our state continues to lead the nation in finding new ways to improve the lives of Minnesotans.”

Six states received an “A” designation. Under the Digital States criteria, an “A” grade reflects a state whose technology leaders are using strong innovation and high-performing solutions and applying excellent practices in all aspects of operations, governance, and administration.

“Minnesotans know what it takes to lead,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “I’m proud of the digital workforce across our state and the work they do every day to prepare us for the future. Congratulations to Commissioner Tomes and all those who helped Minnesota achieve this recognition.”

"When Governor Walz asked me to take on the role of State CIO, he made clear his expectation that Minnesota be a leader in government information technology and cybersecurity,” said Commissioner of Minnesota IT Services Tarek Tomes. “This "A" grade recognizes that, due to the hard work of MNIT staff, our partners in public service, and the Technology Advisory Council, Minnesota is a leader in leveraging the power of technology to keep building an innovative digital government that works for everyone. It celebrates our commitment to a collaborative culture across the executive branch that values people-centered technology experiences.”

Minnesota was also recognized as the third state in the nation for exemplary work in workforce planning. This recognizes how Minnesota has developed processes and plans to address the need for a skilled information technology workforce today and into the future.

The Center for Digital Government aims to use the Digital States Survey to help states benchmark the use of digital technologies to improve service delivery, increase capacity, and reach policy goals. A national overview of all 50 states and their grades can be found on the Center for Digital Government’s website . Minnesota will be recognized during the National Association of State Chief Information Officers Annual Conference in Louisville, KY on October 9.
